Vitor was honoured by the city of Póvoa de Varzim, for his outstanding scientific contributions to our understanding of black holes and gravitational waves and the cosmos at large, and his leadership roles in international collaborations and institutes.

On June 16, Póvoa celebrated its 52th birthday as a city, and celebrated the event by honouring citizens and associations who have played a key role in its evolution, visibility and identity. The ceremony closed with a performance by Mariza, an internationally acclaimed Portuguese singer.
