Our latest social gathering uniquely blended science and art with a pre-screening of Gravitating Gestures, a captivating video artwork by Sjoerd Knibbeler, created during his 2024 residency with the Strong Group. This piece offers an intimate glimpse into the gestures, expressions, and interactions of Strong Group scientists as they engage in discussions.

The mesmerizing cinematography and editing are complemented by a profound soundtrack, composed entirely from distortions of the scientists’ recorded voices—capturing the very essence of their intellectual exchanges. Gravitating Gestures transforms scientific discourse into an artistic experience, inviting viewers to witness the dynamic interplay between thought, movement, and sound.

In addition to the screening, the social events committee challenged participants to a Photography Competition with the theme “Defying Gravity”, encouraging creative interpretations of weightlessness, motion, and suspension. The submissions were as inspiring as they were imaginative, showcasing the intersection of science and visual storytelling. We congratulate Rodrigo Panosso-Macedo, Marta Orselli, and Leart Sabani as the winners of this photography competition! Their winning photo illustrated in this news item. To round off the evening, we enjoyed a selection of Mexican-inspired dishes, adding a flavorful touch to an already engaging event.
